
Računalništvo ima velik vpliv na planet, saj je njegov ogljični odtis primerljiv z odtisom letalske industrije. Zato je nujno, da računalniških rešitev ne razvijajo samo programerji, temveč tudi interdisciplinarni strokovnjaki, sposobni širše kritične presoje.
V okviru predmeta "Trajnostni vidiki računalništva" boste spoznali širše področje trajnosti. Razvili boste zavedanje o pomenu trajnosti ter veščine, potrebne za razumevanje vpliva posameznika in računalništva na planet. Razumeli boste kompleksnost celostne ocene porabe virov računalniških rešitev.
Preverili boste, koliko energije je potrebno za uporabo in izdelavo računalniških tehnologij. Posebej se boste osredotočili na velike podatkovne centre ter sodobne mobilne tehnologije in tehnologije interneta stvari. Naučili se boste predvidevati tudi negativne učinke, ki jih IT prinaša družbi in okolju. Kritično boste vrednotili certifikate in politike na tem področju.
Predmet vključuje predavanja, debate in delavnice. Pomemben del predmeta je projektna naloga, ki jo boste delali v interdisciplinarnih skupinah. Predznanje programiranja ni potrebno.
Computing has a massive impact on the planet, with the CO₂ footprint of computing already comparable to that of the aviation industry. There is an urgent need for computing solutions to be developed not merely by programmers, but by interdisciplinary experts capable of wider critical evaluation.
This course aims to inform us about a wider meaning of sustainability in computing and equip us with interdisciplinary skills needed to understand the impact of computing, as well as holistically assess the resource usage of computing solutions.
In this course we will take a detailed look at how much energy is needed to use and produce computing technologies. We will focus specifically on large data centres and modern mobile and Internet of Things technologies. We will learn how to anticipate potential negative impacts that computing solutions bring to society and the environment. We will also critically evaluate certifications and policies in this area.
The course blends traditional teaching, debates and workshops. A semester-long project, done within interdisciplinary teams, is an essential part of this course. No previous programming experience is needed.
